Ensuring Structural Integrity in Heritage and Listed Buildings
Heritage and listed buildings require special consideration when being assessed for their structural condition or gathering information on their structure to understand how they might be refurbished or strengthened. At Structures Made Easy, we have extensive experience working with historically and architecturally sensitive buildings, including those with all grades of listed status. As chartered structural engineers, our role is to ensure these buildings remain safe and stable while preserving their historic character.
Unlike modern buildings, heritage structures often contain materials that are less commonly used nowadays. These might include such as lime mortar, timber trusses using unusual species or handmade bricks. These and their original construction methods require special consideration to assess how well they are performing structurally, but also to predict how well they will continue to perform. This latter point is particularly important where a listed building is being extended or remodelled. The first step in any structural assessment is a detailed survey. This includes visual inspections and sometimes more advanced non-invasive techniques like ground-penetrating radar to assess foundations or internal cavities without causing damage.
When problems are found, such as deteriorated materials, movement in timber joints or failing roofs, then we carefully develop solutions that are both structurally sound and sensitive to the building’s original fabric and architecture. For example, if a stone wall is bowing, we might design discreet reinforcement using stainless steel ties or internal frames, rather than replacing original masonry.
We also work closely with conservation officers, architects, and heritage consultants. Every intervention must meet strict regulations, ensuring that any work is reversible and uses appropriate materials. In many cases, traditional methods are the best option. For instance, repairing a timber beam with a traditional scarf joint rather than replacing it entirely.
Above all, the goal is to make sure the character and form of these buildings will be maintained. With careful assessment, collaboration, and thoughtful design, we help ensure these irreplaceable structures continue to stand the test of time.
