Further investigations: exploratory works, soil tests and trial pits, cctv drainage, tree report

When Structures-made-Easy are undertaking an investigation at your home or property, we can typically reach a conclusion on the cause of some structural distress or gather enough information to give a definitive guidance on, say, whether a  wall is load-bearing or why a crack has occurred.

In some cases, though, the information necessary to reach a conclusion is not readily available or requires more specialised input.

Structures-made-Easy have extensive experience of buildings of many ages and types but sometimes there is no substitute for further investigations to obtain key additional information that will enable us to give you definitive advice on your structural concern.

These further investigations might be simply removing the plaster locally from a wall to expose the structure behind for our inspection.  Similarly, a pit may need to be excavated to confirm the size and depth of an existing foundation to help determine if it can support a new extension or is susceptible to settlement.

In some cases, though, further investigations are not only required to provide Structures-made-Easy with information, but because advice is required that is beyond our expertise.  Examples of this might be that a tree specialist, an arboraculturalist, is required to advise on how much a tree can safely be cut back without endangering its health or the likely extent of its roots.  Alternatively, the ground conditions exposed by our pit beside the foundations may need specialist analysis to accurately determine how the soil behaves. Whilst Structures-Made-Easy are very experienced in such matters, there are times when a soil specialist, known as a geotechnical engineer, is required to carry out a more detailed analysis of the ground conditions.  Their results would help us determine the overall structural advice we give you. Commonly, leaking below ground drainage can influence homes and properties so we will recommend a CCTV condition survey of the drain is carried out.

Where any such investigations are going to be required, Structures-made-Easy will describe this in our report and discuss with you how best they might be carried out.
