The common thread between all of them is the architectural or social importance of the building and that must be respected during any investigations or works on the building.

These buildings were not always designed and built to the same rigorous standards as today, despite their subsequent importance, but also the effects of time can lead to deterioration of elements of their structure.  Additionally, historic engineers, architects and builders didn’t perhaps understand the influence of ground conditions on a building as well as engineers do today, so foundation issues are also often a problem.

Signs of cracking in perimeter or internal walls, or perhaps a sloping floor or bulging wall are all common in buildings of this age, regardless of their architectural merit. Such issues may be causing you concern and you are seeking or have been recommended to obtain structural advice.

Structures-Made-Easy have extensive experience of historic and Listed buildings from the Tudor period to the modern era.  We are familiar with the structural forms and approaches adopted during these times, from the materials and construction techniques to the standard positions of foundations, or concealed beams and walls.  This last point is important as obtaining permission for intrusive exploratory works to expose concealed structure in Listed buildings is usually difficult.

We will visit the property to gather evidence on the building  and surroundings, then investigate the highlighted issue, including taking measurements.   We will then produce a detailed written report describing the issue, how severe any problems may be and giving options for how the problems could be repaired and the root cause addressed.  We can also give a very crude guideline on the cost of those repairs.  Our report will give guidance on the urgency of remedial works or whether rebuilding is required or most-cost-effective.  

Often a structural problem may be localised in the property and you may wish Structures-Made-Easy only need to report only on that issue.  Alternatively, we can investigate the structure of the entire property.
