Project Overview:

The project involved a series of ground floor alterations, including the removal of chimney breasts, load-bearing walls, and the creation of a single-storey side extension. Central to the success of the project was the implementation of a robust structural strategy aimed at supporting the existing masonry and timber floors while seamlessly integrating the new extension.

Structural Strategy:

A key component of the structural strategy involved the use of steel structures to provide support for the masonry and timber floors above ground floor level. The removal of chimney breasts necessitated the installation of a steel beam spanning from a load-bearing wall to a newly introduced ‘STEEL BOX FRAME,’ which served to support the rear of the original house. This innovative solution ensured both vertical and lateral support for the property, maintaining its structural integrity while minimising disturbance to neighbouring foundations.

Extension Construction:

The construction of the extension involved the creation of newly formed strip shallow foundations, poured to a suitable depth on firm ground. Special attention was given to framing the extension’s rear opening using additional steelwork, allowing for a wide opening devoid of protruding edges. Furthermore, the incorporation of an oriel-style cantilevered bay window added a touch of modern architectural flair, supported by the back wall of the original house.

Exposure and Aesthetic Considerations:

A notable aspect of the project was the intentional exposure of steelwork within the property, serving as a visual focal point in line with the overall architectural scheme. This deliberate design choice not only enhanced the structural integrity of the space but also contributed to its aesthetic appeal, creating a seamless fusion of form and function.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the project exemplifies the successful integration of structural innovation and architectural vision. Through careful planning and strategic implementation, the project team achieved a transformative series of ground floor alterations, seamlessly blending traditional elements with modern design principles. By prioritising structural integrity, functionality, and aesthetic considerations, the project not only enhanced the living space but also added value and character to the property as a whole.
