Details
Structures Made Easy Ltd. was appointed to design all structural elements of the proposed project. The project involved a full width removal of the existing building’s main rear load bearing wall in order to connect the footprint of the original building to the proposed extension to create an open plan layout. Due to the proximity of the new loadbearing support to the adjacent party wall, a steel box frame was designed and utilised in order to divert the loads away from the neighbour’s property. The steel box frame also provided and restored the lateral stiffness of that section of the building. The main extension roof was vaulted so timber ridge beams were adopted to stabilise the roof and support the rafters. The remainder of the extension structure was built with a structural timber frame. Traditional strip foundations were constructed eccentrically at the boundary with neighbours to support the proposed extension and avoid infringing on the neighbour’s land.
